SPM 2025 COMING UP - GOOD LUCK YOUNG MALAYSIANS!
The "Non-Academic" Scholar: Winning with 7As and a World-Class Talent
We want to debunk another myth today: we want to show students that "Straight As" aren't the only path to a full scholarship, and how to leverage sports, arts, or music talents to get corporate and university funding.

In the professional world, 7As is a respectable score. It shows you are competent. But in the scholarship world, talent is the tie-breaker. When a university like Sunway or Taylor's looks at an applicant, they ask: "What will this student bring to our campus?" A 10A student brings a high GPA. A 7A National Swimmer brings a high GPA plus medals, trophies, and publicity for the university.
Universities use "Talent Scholarships" as a marketing strategy. They want to be known as the "Sports University" or the "Arts University." If you are the person who can help them achieve that, they will pay for your entire degree, even if you "only" have 7As.
Let’s look at the actual scholarships available in 2026 for students who don't fit the "academic robot" mold.
A. The Sunway Sports Scholarship
This is arguably the most famous sports scholarship in Malaysia. They have a very clear "Two-Tier" system:
National Athletes (100% Tuition Waiver): If you are in the "First Line-up Elite Athlete" team for Malaysia, your tuition is completely free.
State Athletes (50% Tuition Waiver): If you have participated in SUKMA or MSSM at the state level, you get half off.
The Catch: You must represent Sunway in games like MASISWA and SUKIPT. You also need to contribute 80 hours a year to sports training or workshops.
Academic Bar: You just need to meet the minimum entry requirements for your course (usually 5-credits or 3-5 As depending on the program).
B. Taylor’s University Talent Scholarship
Taylor's looks for "On-Stage" excellence. This is for the musicians, dancers, and actors.
Focus: Musical instruments (Grade 8 Piano, Violin, etc.), Dance, and Singing.
Scholarship: Up to a 100% waiver for those with national-level performance records.
Caveat: For SPM students, they look for a "Minimum 30 points" (which roughly translates to 6-7 As).
C. APU Sportsman Scholarship
Asia Pacific University (APU) is famous for tech, but they are aggressive about sports.
The Deal: National players get a 40% discount, and state players get 25%.
Why it’s great for 7A students: APU’s academic requirement for this is a CGPA of 2.50. It’s very achievable, allowing you to focus on your training.
D. UCSI Trust Sports Bursary
UCSI offers a bursary for state and national athletes verified by the National Sports Council (MSN).
Scholarship: It covers a significant portion of tuition fees for Foundation, Diploma, or Degree programs.
Caveat: They also have a Music Scholarship that requires a compulsory audition. If you can play like a pro, your 7As are more than enough.
If you have 7As, don't lead with your results. Lead with your evidence of talent. A "Non-Academic" scholar will find it useful to prepare a digital portfolio that contains three things:
Photographic / Video evidence: A 90-second video. If you're an athlete, show your best plays. If you're a musician, show a clip of a live performance. Assessors want to see the "Vibe" and the "Skill" immediately.
Verification Letter: This is non-negotiable. You need a letter from the National Sports Council (MSN) or your State Sports Association confirming your status. For arts, a certificate from a recognized body (like ABRSM for music) is essential.
The "Grit" Essay: Write about the 4:00 AM training sessions. Write about the time you lost a major final and how you came back. Use the STAR Method to prove your discipline.
Actionable Tips for you
Tip 1: Negotiate Using "Market Value"
If Sunway offers you 50% but Taylor's offers you 70%, take that offer letter back to Sunway. Talent-based scholarships are more "negotiable" than academic ones. Tell the sports officer: "I really want to swim for Sunway, but I have a higher offer elsewhere. Can we match it?"
Tip 2: The "Coach Recommendation"
Most students get a letter from their Principal. You should get a letter from your Coach. A coach can speak to your character, your punctuality, and your ability to take criticism—traits that scholarship boards love but can't see on a result slip.
Tip 3: Target the "Niche" Sports
Everyone applies for badminton and football. If you excel in Fencing, Squash, Archery, or International Chess, your "market value" is higher because universities find it harder to recruit these specialists.
Tip 4: Still keep the minimum GPA requirement
Winning the scholarship is only half the battle. To keep a Talent Scholarship, you usually have to:
Maintain a CGPA of 2.5 to 3.0.
Compete in at least 2-3 tournaments a year for the university.
Maintain a "clean" disciplinary record (no "ponteng" classes because you were "tired from training").
